These include 14 assorted Scottish & English letters and legal documents. The date range is from 1653, an Edinburgh Sasine Extract, to an 1876 property Surrender document connected with Grimley Manor, near Worcester.
Of particular interest is a Scottish letter, dated 1828 written by one D. Lang from Edinburgh to James Fisher, a farmer living near Biggar. Mr Lang seeks a position as a tutor on board a ship of the Royal Navy, which possibly might refer to HMS Madagscar, a 5th rate ship of the line commanded by Sir Robert Cavendish Spencer.
Mr Lang appears to have been offered this post via Professor James Pillans, FRSE, the noted Scottish educationalist, in the chair of Humanities and Law at Edinburgh University.
Lang's letter includes extracts of letters from Lord Minto, his brother George Elliot, and Professor Pillans himself. The extract from Minto and Pillans make reference to Sir Robert Cavendish Spencer, who at that time was Lord High Admiral. The extract from Admiral George Elliot is noteworthy in that it was written from HMS Victory, which at that time was the guardship to Portsmouth.
